Accomplishments
  • FAMILIES COUNT — NATIONAL HONORS PROGRAM NOMINATION, Annie E. Casey Foundation. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network is one of seven community service organizations from across the United States being recognized for their established success in strengthening families and helping them overcome the challenges of life in economically disadvantaged communities.
  • ENLACE GRANT, Kellogg Foundation. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network has entered into a five-year partnership with Barry College, the University of Florida, Miami-Dade Community College, Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and the Miami Urban Ministries to strengthen education and increase opportunities for Hispanic children to enter and complete college.
  • COMMUNITY VOICES, Kellogg Foundation/United Way. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network is collaborating with Community Voices to sponsor a community forum to discuss health care for the uninsured and underinsured.
  • CENSUS 2000. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network will be a Center for Recruitment and Information to encourage active participation of all the residents in the community. Riverside Elementary will serve as a center for training and information with volunteers from Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network.
  • ACCESS PROJECT — A three year national initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Heller Graduate School at Brandeis University to improve access to health care for families and children. Representatives from Riverside Elementary attend these meetings.
  • TUTORING at Riverside Elementary for 90 children, 3rd and 4th graders, 11 teachers (10-12 children per teacher). The school principal is very excited about the tutoring program and expressed her desire for it to be extended year-round in order to obtain better academic outcomes.
  • COMPUTER CLASSES for children and their parents at Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network in conjunction with Riverside Elementary. New computers were donated to the Center.
  • DADE DAYS. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network, together with the Human Services Coalition and other participants, developed a common policy agenda for Dade Days in Tallahassee.
  • BALLET CLASSES are occurring at Riverside Elementary for girls with good grades who participate at Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network.
  • EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, White House Initiative. Abriendo Puertas/Shared Services Network, Miami Senior High, and Riverside Elementary planned and participated in the two-day forum.
  • COLGATE-PALMOLIVE DENTAL SCREENING VAN. In collaboration with Riverside Elementary, free dental screenings for children and free referrals to local dental clinics were provided.
  • BREATH WITH EASE CAMPAIGN. In collaboration with Riverside Elementary, parents, teachers, and the community at large were trained on asthma and its effects on children.
  • CSAP CAMPAIGN. Center for Substance Abuse Prevention Spanish-language materials were distributed to families addressing the dangers of substance abuse. A community meeting was held with guest speakers from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), La Raza (a Hispanic coalition), and local government. This meeting was aired on national television.
  • BRUCE HEIKEN MEMORIAL FUND. Free eye screenings and eyeglasses were provided for Riverside Elementary students.
